Left Flank is proud to be supporting this year’s Historical Materialism Australasia conference — States, Social Reproduction, Capital — which will be held in Central Sydney on 5-6 September 2014. There is an impressive array of papers and discussions confirmed, with contributors from Australia and internationally, which should make this the biggest and best HM Australasia conference to date.

Leo Panitch

This year’s keynote speaker is Leo Panitch, co-author of last year’s Deutscher Prize winning book, The Making of Global Capitalism: The Political Economy of American Empire. He will be speaking on ‘Rethinking Marxism a century after World War One’. He will also participate in a roundtable on the book, co-sponsored by Jacobin magazine.

Other highlights include: a roundtable on Thomas Piketty’s Capital in the 21st Century; the official launch of two important new books on neoliberalism and the crisis; panels on the ecology, Latin America, philosophy, state theory, migration & race, political economy and Left history; and our closing plenary on ‘Feminising emancipation’.

Left Flank’s Elizabeth Humphrys, Marc Newman and Tad Tietze will be speaking at the event.

More information about the event can be found at the conference website. A full timetable is downloadable in PDF format here.
